The Benefits of Weight Training for Women Over 50

With weight training, or any fitness routine, it is never a matter of “too little, too late”, no matter how old you are. Starting a strength training routine after 50 can provide many beneficial results to any and all who begin and stick to a program. Women over 50 generally tend to avoid resistance training in part due to the erroneous belief that training with weights will add unwanted bulk to their overall body makeup. The benefits far outweigh any imagined costs and include the following:

  • Loss of body fat. As we gain muscle, we burn calories and fat more easily. For every two pounds of muscle gained, it is expected that a woman will lose about 3.5 pounds of fat.
  • Increased strength. As we grow older it can be disheartening to find that we are not as strong as we used to be. Weight training can add strength in women without the bulk that men experience.
  • Increased bone density. Weight-bearing exercise adds not only strength to our muscles but to our bones too, reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Reduced risk of injury and disease. By building stronger muscles, connective tissue strength is also improved allowing for increased joint stability and flexibility. Studies also show that strength training can improve cardiovascular health and reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes and arthritis.
